I Made It, I Sware

Posted in Personal on July 7, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Not a lot happened during the 4th for me, basically went to work and a baseball game. But between the two I made a little lawn art. about a month ago my dad mowed the lawn in the shape of the United States flag in the photo below. I thought that was pretty cool but I wanted to do it again (kind of like, “whatever you can do, I can do better” ). A month later, the 4th of July, I mowed the lawn shown in the second photo. The only problem was, everyone thought that my dad made it. Oh well.

There was a full moon a few nights ago and I started to wonder what kind of photos I could take at night with it. The first photo was really more of an accident but I happened to choose a pretty good white balance setting and then I left the shutter open for 86 seconds. I looked at the photo and thought, “Dang, I screwed up” but a lot of my friends like the photo. So then I went out and took the second photo last night.

First cycling photos of the year

Posted in Cycling, Sports on June 26, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

The USA cycling U-23 national championships were in Bend this year. Today I went to the criterium race and took a few images. For those that do not what a criterium is, it’s a race around a short city course (usually about a mile or less in length) and the cyclists race for predetermined time or complete a set number of laps. First one across the finish line on the last lap wins. I love these because the racers are so close the crowds. Anyway here are a few of my favorite images from the day.

I was able to shoot during the 2010 NCAA track championships, this was my first championship event at the collegiate level. Jordan Bishop was Oregon State’s only competitor and seeded 24 out of 24 in the high jump finals, he ended the day tied for 10th place.

PGE Park Hosts Its Final Civil War

Posted in Baseball, Editorial, Sports with tags , , , , , , on June 2, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

On Wednesday the Oregon State Beavers and the University of Oregon Ducks met for the last time this season at Portland’s, PGE Park. I have looked forward to this game since I saw the photos taken during it last year by Craig Mitchelldyer, a Portland photographer I have admired for a while. If the opportunity to shoot in another stadium ever arrives, I usually get really pumped and try to take photos that are a little different from the photos I already have. This game was no exception.

No Photo Pass, No Problem

Posted in Motorsports, Personal, Sports with tags , , on May 16, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Ok, so not a lot of people know this but I am a huge motorsports fan. In fact I am writing this and trying to decide if I will stay up and watch the Monaco Grand Prix live in about 4 hours or catch a replay in a few weeks (its 1am.) Anyway, last night I drove up to Portland International Raceway and (as a spectator and fan) shot the first few stages of the Oregon Trail Rally.

A Day On The Lake

Posted in Personal, Rowing, Sports with tags , , on May 16, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Last Wednesday the Sports Information office set up a day for me to go shoot the men’s rowing team. They did this because we have not taken very many photos this year, things just have not worked out. Here is why there are so few photos.

My first attempt this year was at our “home” meet in Dexter, Oregon. The photos from the dock were very boring and useless. Then it was all figured out so that I would be in the chase boat for

Civil War Baseball

Posted in Baseball, Personal, Sports with tags , , , on May 12, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

The #15 Oregon Ducks took on the unranked Oregon State Beavers this past weekend in what would be one of the best series of the year. I honestly thought that Oregon State had no chance of winning based on how they did against Oregon 11 days before, where they lost 9-4 during a non-conference game.

Instead the Beavers took down the Ducks winning all three games and making every one of them a nail-biter.

Spring Football: Post #2 Spring Game!

Posted in Football, Sports with tags , , , , on May 2, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

All the spring practices have come down to the final game before fall and I have a pretty big post about the whole game. Don’t expect a play-by-play though, just a ton of photos. I ended up with (what I considered to be a lot) of keep-able photos and even after filtering out the ones that I didn’t like all that much I still had a record (my own personal record) number of photos for a blog post. I hope you enjoy!

Oregon State Track

Posted in Sports, Track/Cross Country with tags , , , on May 2, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

For the second time in 2 weeks I was ditched and left to drive on my own to some Oregon State sporting events. That doesn’t really bother me, it just gets a little boring driving places on your own. On Friday night I went down to Eugene for the Oregon Relays to shoot OSU.

Caged In

On Saturday night I drove over to Lebanon to shoot the racing that took place at the Willamette Speedway. The only other time that I had shot auto racing was as a spectator at least 4-5 years ago, its been a while. This is just another one of my, I have never tried this before lets give it a shot ideas, and those tend to be pretty fun.  This one was fun but by the end of the night I found the photos to be a bit boring from the infield and only the infield.

Spring Practice: Post #1

Posted in Football, Sports with tags , , on April 16, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Its spring and for me that means, well a lot,  but one thing that does take up some time is football practice. 3 days a week here in Corvallis I am over at the practice fields or in Reser Stadium taking photos. Here are some of the photos I have come up with in the past few weeks.
