New Camera

So I got a used 1D mark III in mint condition and was able to use it the first few hours that I had it. Wow, what an amazing camera. Within a few minutes of using it I felt like I had been using it forever because the settings and menus are basically the same on the 7D. The colors sharpness of the photos were also great right from the start, it took a little while to get my 7D looking that good. Anyway here is my favorite photo from the 3 hours I used it last night.

Winterhawks Round 2

A few weeks back I was asked to shoot the Winterhawks game in Portland because the team wanted to see if my photos would be better in the Rose Garden compared to the Memorial Coliseum. But I had already committed myself to going to Seattle with the OSU track team. As spring break ended I thought well maybe I will ask if I could shoot one of the playoff games to make up for not being able to earlier, it worked!

Softball, Baseball, Rowing and A Remote Camera

Posted in Baseball, Rowing, Softball with tags , , , , on March 19, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Usually I would have spent this last weekend cramming for finals but since I had just papers and projects that were all turned in before finals week, I decided to spend the whole weekend photographing sports(as if I wouldn’t have done that anyway)

So no big surprise, It was a busy weekend. I went to softball on Friday which was called in the bottom of the 7th due to rain. Then early Saturday I drove a fellow intern and I down to Dexter, Oregon to watch the OSU rowing team and then drove straight from the races back to Corvallis for baseball. It was a double-header with the first game between Utah and the second against the Portland Pilots. Sunday was an easy day, one baseball game at 3pm. Oh, and I tried out a remote camera set up during the baseball games.

Last Chance Qualifier

One day while sitting in my apartment I received a text from one of the SIDs at OSU(my bosses) asking if I wanted to go with the track team to Seattle, Of Course! That sounded great until I heard the stories of how dark it was inside the stadium they would be competing in. I have not taken photos in a stadium that dark since high school.

Papé Grand Slam

Baseball is back in Corvallis and I couldn’t be happier. This weekend OSU hosted the Papé Grand Slam which was the home opener for the Beavers. I and many others have been waiting for the season to start-up and now that it has I am able to use 2 pieces of equipment that have yet to see a baseball game.

New Sport!

Posted in Lacrosse with tags , , , on March 1, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

I have found a new sport to photograph here at Oregon State, lacrosse! I shot a little lacrosse in high school but have not even seen a game since then. For this reason I went a little overboard and took a lot more photos then I normally would, oh well.  The team seems to be very excited to have some photos coming their way so I guess the more the merrier.

Skiing

So, I didn’t have to go take photos of skiing. I don’t know anyone racing and I have nowhere to send the pictures but, better to go out and do it rather than say, “I should have tried that.”

Busy Day

Posted in Basketball, Rugby, Soccer on February 22, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

This year I have taken a few photos of the Oregon State rugby club for fun and the players and families really like having pictures. This lead to me being asked to shoot the rugby game on Saturday. I was already going to shoot the basketball game which also started at 12pm and on top of that there was an exhibition soccer game at 2pm. It all worked out though.

I decided to go to the first half of the rugby game.

Then made it back to Gill for the second half of the basketball game.

And then ended the day with a few shots of the soccer match.

First Hockey Game

Posted in Hockey, Personal on February 17, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

Ok, that title is a little deceiving. I have been to hockey games before but I am usually hundreds of feet away from the rink, this was however my first game that I have photographed. The photographer that has been shooting for the Winterhawks has moved to San Antonio. Before he left he put in a good word for me to the team and that got me a chance to take some photos, a tryout basically.

I have never covered a hockey game before so I spent every second I could to figure out the lighting in the stadium and the areas that I could shoot from. The hard part was the glass that you have to shoot through. I ended up with settings far from what I thought I would have used.

Overall it was extremely fun and I hope that the team will want me to shoot more games for them in the future.

Here is my first and hopefully not last photo on the team’s website

Night of Firsts

I went to the Bend Winterfest this weekend with one thing on my mind, photos of snowboarding. I have never shot snowboarding before but I have wanted to for a while. I also had an underlying reason to go because I really wanted to try to take a sequence photo. For a first attempt without any kind of press pass and just taking photos from the stands I think it went well.

A New Angle

Posted in Editorial, Gymnastics, Sports on February 15, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

On Friday I shot the 5th home gymnastics meet of the 2010 season for Oregon State. Since the routines do not change very much I was looking for something new that no one has seen at OSU this year. While checking the USA Gymnastics website to see if they were still using my photos  saw some cool shots from overhead. I thought, “I could do that” and after talking to the right people I was able to try my Idea.

And some other shots from the night

Here is how the photo looked on the website that night

Which also lead to my first photo on the NCAA website

OSU Recruiting Dinner

Posted in Football, Personal, Sports on February 5, 2010 by Ethan Erickson

I was asked if I could cover Oregon State’s annual recruiting dinner. Of course, I like photographing new things. The dinner was last night at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The lighting for the event was very dark but there were some cool projections on the walls that were good for photos. Here are a few from last night…
